...as the sun settles in the sky this afternoon and the snow starts to melt away...I realize that soon this winter season will be over and Spring 2010 will be here....this winter has been a very special time for me....I was home due to surgery since Nov 1st and I have been able to spend some quality time with my fabulous humble family...my son is now 16.5 and doing so well...the pups are our loyal companions...we had our last litter of puppies leave us on Christmas eve...and on New Year's eve my son's dream came true...after 12 years of teasing me for a Golden we were able to rescue JAKE...he fits in perfectly with our 'fur famly'...and has become best friends with our cat RYANSEACREST....as I ready myself for a new adventure in my life..my reflections of this winter are pretty simple...I am so lucky...lucky to have such great friends, family and most importantly- a son who I will treasure forever...It wasn't easy to create a family as a single gay dad...but so worth the effort...parenting is difficult at times as I try balancing all of the pressures of life...but at the end of the day....he is my greatest treasure, my greatest JOY...so, if you are looking to create a family...I urge you to do so...however that happens for you...discover family in 2010....discover your greatest treasure. Being a sensitive person in this world can sometimes feel very draining due to the fact that we are very receptive to the energy of the people and environment around us. Still, we want to be part of situations that involve small or large groups of people, and we would like to do it without becoming overwhelmed or exhausted. With a few simple strategies we can entertain at home and socialize in the world without running the risk of losing ourselves in someone else’s energy or giving our energy away. All this takes is a little time and practice, and the result—being part of social events without ending up depleted—is well worth the effort.

The whole purpose of this self-care ritual is to help keep yourself strong energetically when you are in a situation that could potentially be draining. For example, if you are having a party, you might take some time to prepare beforehand. Just as you spend time cleaning your home and preparing food, it is essential to prepare your inner home for the event. This can be as simple as taking a mindful walk or a cleansing bath, or engaging in any other activity that gives you energy. You can even just sit alone for a set period of time, tuning in to your energy and connecting to yourself so that you are less easily carried away by the energy outside of yourself.

Keep in mind that it is always acceptable to excuse yourself for a bathroom break or to step outside for a moment. This can give you the time and space you need to check in with yourself and correct any energetic imbalances you detect. Whether you are at home or out in the world, taking care of yourself in this way enables you to keep your energy strong, even as you open yourself to others.

We have so much dissatisfaction in our lives. We are dissatisfied with our achievements and with everything else. Every single person, even those in their twenties, always thinks, “I am getting too old, too chubby,” and so forth. Then later it increases into worrying about getting wrinkles, gray hair, and so on. We build that pain within us. The true reality of aging will catch up with you when you are in your sixties, at my age, but the suffering begins even in our twenties. That is why we always put on make-up!
We have tremendous mental and emotional pains. We are very emotional people, extremely emotional. Likes and dislikes affect us tremendously, and we show it very clearly. Finding opportunities to reconnect with nature to enjoy its healing benefits can be difficult, however. Planting and tending a garden allows us to spend time with Mother Nature in a very personal and hands-on way. We work in tandem with nature while gardening—honoring the seasons, participating in the life cycle of various organisms, experiencing the unique biorhythms of our environments, and transcending all that divides us from the natural world. As we interact with the soil, we are free to be ourselves and reflect upon meditative topics. Fresh air invigorates us, while our visceral connection to the earth grounds us.

Though you may plant a garden to grow food or herbs, or for the pleasure of seeing fresh flowers in bloom, you will likely discover that the time you spend working in your plot feels somehow more significant than many of the seemingly more important tasks you perform each day. Whether your garden can be measured in feet or is a collection of plants in pots, tending it can be a highly spiritual experience. Some of our goals and dreams come to fruition so easily that it is as if an unseen hand has done much of the work for us. When this happens, we say it must have been meant to be. On the other hand, when dreams and goals require a tremendous amount of effort, we may interpret this to mean that our dream is not meant to be. However, difficulty is not necessarily a sign that our hopes and plans are ill-fated. On the contrary, difficulties and challenges along the path can be important parts of the project’s overall meaning.

When everything goes smoothly, we feel blessed by the universe, as if a fleet of angels is guiding and supporting our every move. When things are rough or ambiguous, we sometimes feel that we have been abandoned. And yet, the truth is that we are blessed in both cases. Our angels and guides are always present. They may choose at times to back off and let us figure something out for ourselves, and this is when things seem difficult. But when things are difficult, we learn and grow in specific ways. There is a unique satisfaction that comes to us when we succeed at something that has been a challenge. Our sense of self-reliance expands, and our ability to endure and keep the faith is stronger for having been tested. We learn that we are capable of confronting and overcoming the obstacles in our path, and this empowers us to dream still bigger dreams, knowing that we will not be daunted by the challenges inherent in birthing them.

When we find ourselves facing difficulties with a particular plan or project, the chances are we know already whether we are meant to continue on or let it go. We simply need to look within ourselves for the answer. When an idea is meant to be, it comes back to us time and time again. There are times when change—moving to a new city or a new home, or changing careers—is the right thing at the right time. But there are also times when the urge for change is really just a desire to run away from problems that need to be faced rather than avoided. These are the kinds of problems that recur in our lives. For example, issues with coworkers that seem to arise at every job we take, or repeatedly getting into unhealthy relationships. A move might temporarily distract us, and even cure the problem for a time, simply by taking us out of the situation in which the problem fully manifested itself. However, the problem will eventually appear again in our new situation.

One way to make sure you aren’t running away from your problems is to notice whether you are moving towards something that is exciting in its own right, as opposed to something that is appealing only because it is not where you are now. For example, if you are leaving a city because you feel you can’t afford it, you could be reinforcing poverty consciousness, and you might find that you are unable to make ends meet in your new city as well. It would ultimately be less of an effort to stay where you are and look more deeply into your beliefs about money. You may discover that as you address these issues, you are able to make more money simply by changing your mindset. You may still decide to move, but it will be an act with a positive intention behind it and not an escape, which could make all the difference.

Any pain involved in facing our issues is well worth the effort in the end. When we face our problems instead of avoiding them, we free our energy and transform ourselves from people who run away into people who move enthusiastically forward.

Midway through “Finian’s Rainbow,” which opens Thursday on Broadway, the stage veteran Terri White delivers a bluesy, rasping version of the song “Necessity.” The character wants to play, to rest her “head in the shade,” but, Ms. White belts out, turning to the face the audience directly, “the rent ain’t paid!”

It is one of those crucial moments in musical theater, a flash of heartbreak that tethers the fanciful, carefree world of the show to the familiar, harsh realities of the everyday.

If Ms. White’s delivery feels particularly authentic, it is because she has lived those lyrics more personally than even the most diehard method actress would want. In the summer of 2008, Ms. White, 61, could not make rent. She was evicted from her apartment of 14 years, after a breakup with a longtime girlfriend. She could not work. She also could not find a way to ask for help. For three months, when she was not crashing on a friend’s couch, she slept in Washington Square Park.

The daughter of traveling performers, Ms. White has been performing in musicals since she was 8, and the language of the medium infects her life narrative. She started out as a “hoofer,” a tap-dancer. She has a theme song: “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out.” And as of July 2008, she felt she was “all washed up.”

Between gigs on Broadway and singing with Liza Minnelli, Ms. White had always worked for tips in piano bars around the West Village. She was a regular at 88’s until it closed, then found a new home at Rose’s Turn on Grove Street — until it, too, closed. She struggled to get a perch at the few surviving piano bars around town. Heartfelt if campy renditions of American songbook classics were out. Spoofy if campy versions of ’80s pop were in. “They want to bring in the younger crowd,” Ms. White said. “And I’m old.”

She still played one night a week at the Duplex, on Christopher Street, earning enough to keep her phone on and get by on Ramen noodles, and kept some clothing there after losing her apartment. In the park, Ms. White slept on a bench near the bathroom because it made her feel more civilized. She knew some of the longstanding homeless there from her years in the neighborhood (they often tried to bum cigarettes as she smoked on the sidewalk). And she got to know the temporarily homeless like herself.

“Their clothes did not look like they were from Goodwill,” she said. “They looked like they’d had jobs.”

Ms. White never mentioned to the others who slept in the park that she had performed alongside Glenn Close in the Tony-nominated “Barnum,” in 1980; nor did she ask about their pasts. Severely depressed, she was too proud to reach out to social services, and kept the extent of her problems from friends. “Most of them are barely getting by in their tiny apartments as it is,” she said. “People in New York, they need their patterns. You can’t interrupt them.”

To avoid the police, Ms. White usually alternated sleeping for an hour with walking for an hour, which is what she was doing when she ran into Officer David Taylor on Grove Street at 4 a.m. one day last fall. Officer Taylor had come to know Ms. White when he was patrolling the West Village. He admired her energy, and, off-duty, came to see her perform. He had never seen her looking like she did on Grove Street. “She is usually someone who lifts your energy if you’re feeling down,” he said. “That night she looked soulless. I was concerned for her — scared.”

Officer Taylor made a few phone calls. A friend in Jersey City had a place with a basement apartment no one was using. Ms. White moved in the next day, rent-free. She got herself back into the mental shape to take advantage of opportunities that came her way. An old friend in the Florida Keys invited her to perform at her nightclub, and another friend bought her a plane ticket.

In Florida, she met Donna Barnett, a stately 62-year-old jewelry designer — and, like Ms. White, a cigarette fiend, a fan of road trips and musicals and Maker’s Mark. The two fell in love, and moved in together. When the call came for an audition for an Encores! concert performance of “Finian’s Rainbow” (a predecessor to the Broadway production), Ms. Barnett paid her airfare back to New York. After months of coming close, but ultimately hearing “No thank you” — she auditioned nine times for “Chicago” — Ms. White landed the part of “Finian’s” Dottie.

So, now, almost a year to the day after she last slept on a bench, Ms. White is back on Broadway, in a play she first performed in as a child, at the St. James Theater — the very place she earned her Tony nomination for “Barnum.” On Sunday, she and Ms. Barnett are having a commitment ceremony at the St. James.

Most of her fellow cast members in “Finian’s Rainbow” know enough about Ms. White’s trials that when she sings, “There ought to be a law against necessity,” they sing back, with particular feeling, “Sister, you’re so right.”

And then it’s on to the rest of the play, with its pot of gold and its world of song and, of course, its impossibly happy ending.

Sometimes we have an experience that we don’t understand, but if we look deeply, or wait long enough, a reason for that experience will usually reveal itself. All the events in our lives lead to other events, and all that we have manifested in this present moment is the result of past events and experiences. We cannot easily tease apart the many threads that have been woven together to create our current reality. Experiences that don’t make sense, as well as any that we regret, are just as responsible for the good things in our lives as the experiences we do understand or label as "good."

This is especially important to remember at times when we feel directionless or unsure of what to do. It is often at times like these that we take a job or move to a place without really knowing if it’s the right thing to do. We may ultimately end up leaving the job or the place, but often during that time we will have met someone who becomes an important friend, or we may have an experience that changes us in a profound way. When all the pieces of our life don’t quite make sense, we can remember that there may be some hidden gem of a reason that we are where we are having the experiences we are having.

"Brows are meant to be sisters, not twins," says brow sculptor and makeup artist Deborah Netti. It's an interesting theory—especially coming from a brow sculptor who happens to be the semi-identical twin sister of the Brow Diva, a.k.a. Deanna Netti Cahill.

Netti Cahill has spent six years—the past four at her business at 3025 Monroe Ave. in Pittsford—building what is now a national reputation for her brow work and her line of brow-enhancing cosmetic products.

Her sister's theory is that a person's eyebrows are meant to complement each other instead of being perfectly symmetrical. Now, Deborah is embarking on a business venture of her own, Brow Chic, slated to open in April at 2450 W. Ridge Road in Greece, across from The Mall at Greece Ridge.

Is this the beginning of a brow war? No, the twins insist.

"Competition is good," Deanna says. "I have a very successful business. Why wouldn't I wish success—especially for my sister? I am thrilled."

In fact, Deanna has referred customers to Deborah—people who live near Greece who may find Deborah's location more convenient.

The two grew up in Fairport.

"She was like an extension of me," Deanna says.

"There's no closer bond than the twin bond," Deborah adds.

For more than a decade, they worked together at their own company—Jumelle Makeup in Brighton. (Jumelle is French for twin.) But an article about eyebrow artist Anastasia of Beverly Hills changed Deanna's life. She wanted to work solely on eyebrows and elevate it to an art, which meant breaking away from Deborah.

"It was one of the hardest decisions I had to make," Deanna says.

Deborah continued working as a makeup artist and also learned the art of brow sculpting. Years later, Deborah wanted to rejoin Deanna at Brow Diva. But Deanna adhered to the rule of not mixing family or friends with business.

Deborah was devastated. But she now says it was the best thing for both to have their own businesses.

So who's the better brow sculptor? No, not even that question can start a fight.

"We have our different styles," Deborah says.

"We learn from each other," Deanna says.

F.A.G NEWS! JUDE KEANE passes......

My dear friend Jude Keane passed away after a long battle with breast cancer. Jude embodied a fighting spirit and kept a positive attitude during her most grueling days of treatment.

She was loved by so many. A tuff-as-nails conversationalist and an avid promoter of equal rights, she helped me during the most difficult times when I was in the adoption process. Jude loved the fact that I wanted to create a family as a gay single dad- upon my son's adoption she threw us a surprise "baby" shower to celebrate.

Jude loved to celebrate with a glass of Trader Joe's Merlot! We toasted LIFE constantly! We met at Unity Church in Santa Fe and served on many boards together. We started a book club and ended up being the only members of the club- our gatherings were always met with non-stop chatter and pot-luck food.

Jude made me sauce.... every couple of weeks we would stop over for pasta. One night I brought over my new boyfriend and the two of them hit it off....Jude and David Ruiz became best pals and upon David's death 2 years ago Jude was devastated.

A wave of grief hit me hard this morning as I remembered how many times I called Jude for parental advice....she was matter-of-fact with me about raising kids- "NO is NO"....and she would always say to me...."don't talk so much! just hug your son, that's all he wants".....

Jude was proud of her grand kids Katie and Tim, loving them deeply. She was also proud of her son Richard, traveling last summer to Scotland for his marriage ceremony to his partner John. Even during her treatments and fatigue she wanted to be there for the wedding of two men who loved each other. Jude was also in awe of her daughter Susan's marriage to Jonas, their devotion to each other was something she longed for but didn't experience in her lifetime.

Last May, my son and I traveled to Santa Fe and were able to throw a dinner together with Jude- our friend Kelsang Jorlam hosted a fab night filled with laughter and loving conversation. One more time we shared a bottle of Merlot and a great dinner....

I miss my dear friend's counsel....and I will always hold her memory close to my heart as I travel on....knowing that somewhere, someday we will reunite for glass of cheap wine and some yummy sauce.....goodbye my sweet friend.

We all wrestle with our demons and should not stand in judgement of another....but what if another person's perspective is so clouded that the 'TRUTH' of a matter is no longer the truth?....how does one respond gracefully with compassion....Today is a hard day for me as I grabble with this situation....I know what my truth is and I know how I handled it...but what if the spin the person is spinning is upsetting...how do I really let go?....

During each of our journeys, there are those inevitable moments when someone comes into our life at precisely the right time and says or does precisely the right thing. Their words or actions may help us perceive ourselves more clearly, remind us that everything will turn out for the best, help us cope, or see us through difficult situations. These people are human angels – individuals designated by the universe to be of service to those in need at specific points in time. Some human angels make a commitment before their births to make a positive contribution to the world at a particular moment. Others were chosen by the universe. All human angels, however, come into our lives when we least expect them and when we can most benefit from their presence.
A few of the human angels we may encounter are in professions where helping others is an everyday occurrence. But most of them are regular people, going about their daily lives until called upon to be in the right place at the right time to bring peace, joy, help, or heal someone when they most need it. You may have met a human angel in the form of a teacher who gave you a piece of advice that touched your soul and influenced your path. The person that momentarily stopped you to say hello on the street, delaying you long enough to avoid an oncoming car or a collision, is also a human angel. They may offer nothing more than a kind word or a smile, but they will offer it when you can draw the most strength and support from their simple action.
You may be a human angel yet not know it. Your fate or intuition may guide you toward other people’s challenging or distressing situations, leading you to infer that you simply have bad luck. But recognizing yourself as a human angel can help you deal with the pain you see and understand that you are there to help and comfort others during their times of need. Human angels give of their inner light to all who need it, coming into our lives and often changing us forever.
