NEW YORK, N.Y. - Dan Harvey, a longtime book publishing executive, passed away on October 23, 2008 after a long struggle with melanoma. He had homes on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and in Stone Ridge, New York.
Harvey was most recently Senior Vice President, Director of Marketing for Trident Media Group, a literary agency. He joined the company in January 2007.
For 17 years, Harvey held senior management positions at the Putnam Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Group (USA). He left the company in 2006 as Senior Vice President and Publishing Director. Prior to that, he was Director of Publicity, Advertising and Promotion at Harper and Row, and Director of Publicity at Princeton University Press.
During his career, Harvey created campaigns for some of the leading commercial authors in America, including Tom Clancy, Patricia Cornwell, Catherine Coulter and Nora Roberts. His marketing direction for number-one best selling books by Lance Armstrong, A. Scott Berg, Clive Cussler, Sue Grafton, Spencer Johnson, John Sandford and Amy Tan, among many, created a standard of effective support for booksellers at all levels backed by imaginative consumer campaigns.
Daniel G. Harvey was born in Danville, Virginia on December 3, 1945. He attended the College of William and Mary, and upon graduation served two years in the United States Army. He is survived by his partner, Michael Teipner, of New York and Stone Ridge, a brother and sister-in-law, Peyton and Chele Harvey of Spartanburg, South Carolina, his niece Kathryn Harvey of New York City and a nephew, Christopher Harvey, of Charleston, South Carolina.
A memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in his memory to the research fund of his oncologist, Dr. Jedd Wolchok, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Ave., New York, NY 10065.
